There are moments when we stand at a crossroads between comfort and the desire to explore. We embark on a new trek, a climb, or a plan to conquer new challenges, surrounded by the raw beauty of nature and all its unpredictable moods. The mountains ahead rise like guardians of unknown adventures. It’s a kind of special magic that draws us in, never knowing what awaits us just a few minutes ahead. In these moments, having the perfect partner that provides safety, comfort, and freedom of movement is essential.
An invaluable companion in such situations is the hardshell jacket GUIDE by DIRECT ALPINE. Designed to support you in harsh mountain weather, during ice climbing, or adrenaline-filled ski descents, this technical masterpiece combines waterproofing, breathability, durability, lightweight construction, and excellent packability. The GUIDE easily fits into a small backpack—something you’ll appreciate when you need a quick rescue on the ridge.
How It All Began
The development of the GUIDE jacket started with a simple but crucial question: "How do we create a jacket that can withstand the most extreme conditions while remaining light and compact enough for everyday use?" At first glance, it seems like a contradiction—robustness and durability versus lightness and packability. But this very challenge held the key to success, and our designers embraced it from the start.
The GUIDE jacket is the result of this philosophy. It’s no coincidence that its name references mountain guides—people who embody reliability, courage, expertise, and adventure.
The Road to Perfection
Our journey to creating the GUIDE jacket resembled a mountain ascent. We started at "base camp," analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of existing materials, construction techniques, and designs. We realized that two-layer and 2.5-layer laminates offer low weight and great packability but lack durability. On the other hand, robust hardshell jackets are often too heavy and bulky. So how do we combine the best of both worlds?
The solution lay in combining two different materials, each serving a specific function. We used a more durable fabric on the shoulders and waist—areas that endure the most pressure from backpacks or harnesses. The rest of the jacket is made of lighter materials, allowing flexibility and better breathability. As a whole, the jacket stands out with its low weight and easy packability.
But the GUIDE is not just about materials. It’s also about those small details that make a big difference. We considered every seam, zipper, and pocket.
Every Detail Has Its Purpose
Once you put on this jacket, you’ll understand that its design is far from random. The diagonal central zipper with opposing sliders isn’t just visually unique—it’s practical, preventing irritation on the chin. The high collar protects the face from wind and rain while providing a secure feel. And when you zip it up fully, the soft inner layer ensures no discomfort against the skin. For the men's model, a perforated high collar improves breathability, and when unzipped, it can be secured with a side magnet to prevent flapping in the wind.

A prime example of thoughtful design is the large hood with three-way adjustment, designed to comfortably fit over a helmet. It provides reliable protection in heavy rain and strong winds. And when packed into a backpack, the hood doubles as a storage pouch for the jacket itself.
Durability That Won’t Back Down
By using reinforced fabric in all high-stress areas—on the shoulders, sleeves, hood, and back—and lighter materials in less exposed areas, we have fine-tuned the jacket’s construction for durability, extreme breathability, and minimal weight.
When climbing steep slopes, your body generates heat, causing moisture to build up inside the jacket. Long ventilation zippers on the sides allow for quick cooling, and they also provide easy access to pockets in lower layers. A major advantage is that these zippers are accessible even when wearing a backpack harness, eliminating the need to unclip or stop to cool down.

Practical Pockets for Everything You Need
How often have you struggled to find your gloves, goggles, or valuables deep in your backpack while trekking or climbing? The GUIDE jacket has the answer. A large chest pocket with an expandable design is perfect for bigger items like gloves or climbing skins, while an inner zippered pocket securely stores your documents or phone. And let’s not forget the sleeve pocket featuring a Recco® signal reflector—an invaluable technology in mountain rescue situations.

Reflective elements are another crucial feature of this hardshell jacket. They ensure visibility in low-light conditions, whether at dusk or in the dark. You may not notice these details at first glance, but in critical situations, they can make all the difference. For example, the entire central zipper itself serves as the jacket’s most prominent reflective element.
