Ammassalik Greenland 2012

After a successful expedition on sea kayaks into the icy waters off the coast of east Greenland in 2010, Petr Novotny and his team decided to travel to Greenland again this year, for this time with a ski equipment. During these days is the expedition succesfully back in the Czech Republic.

The eastern part of Greenland, occasionally wears a nickname Swiss-Greenland coast, is an ideal place to visit with skis. Unlike Switzerland, however, is a desolate, deserted and unspoiled landscapes, where you can next to the rock, ice and snow to see perhaps grouse or raven. And into this not well known environment went the expeditions composed by Petr Novotny, Radek Novacek, Antonín Volk and Petr Socha.

Plan has been fulfilled, even exceeded - originally planned range greatly increased, so the expedition finally overcame about 250 kilometers. Partly on the dog sledding, boat, mostly on skis with special cargo sled in the back. It was not just about the transition, the aim was mainly downhill and monitoring options for the future of downhill ski visits. In each of the visited part was successful at least one downhill.

While snow conditions were not optimal - in March than in practice for several days following rain and strong winds with a slight snowing built all kinds of snow, just not easy and ideal powder. the more the weather but managed. Practically the entire stay out of the civilization was almost no wind and sunny, and which made temperatures ¨below -20 ° C in total acceptable environment (night records is estimated at -26 ° C). On its way the expedition built three basic camps, one on the glacier Kerala, another nameless plateau on the „floor“ above, and the last one near the fjord Sermilaq.

There is a very few places on the planet where is possible to climb on skis from the frozen sea level to a height of more than two thousand meters. What was it you will know in a series of presentations and media outputs, which will begin to emerge after the summer holidays (e. g. in the October - issue of Snow). As the kayak expedition this time created a multimedia slide show presented in a number of cultural and sports centers and festivals throughout the country. Many articles can be found on the pages of other prestigious journals, websites, or you can watch any of the debates on radio and television stations.
